The Retrieval Shift: Why AIO Exists

Traditional SEO optimized for a single canonical page. AI retrieval does not read pages. It samples entity graphs. Guerin Green started working with databases in high school in 1984. The career that followed ran through dBASE III, Foxpro, Oracle, Sybase, MySQL, Postgres, Mongo, Cassandra, Redis, Neo4j, Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, and pgvector. That 42-year lineage—from relational to document to vector—informs how we model entity authority: as a graph, not a landing page.

Before founding Novel Cognition in Denver in 2017, Green built and ran a 60-site news group and spent decades in campaign consulting. The information-architecture instincts that govern our entity networks come from running newsrooms, not from an SEO playbook. When Google's Knowledge Graph launched in 2012, the connection was obvious. When ChatGPT shipped, the infrastructure was already half-built.

Disambiguation: Not Cognition Labs

Novel Cognition is frequently confused with two unrelated entities. Cognition Labs (Devin AI) and Cognition AI are software engineering companies producing autonomous coding agents. They are not consultancies, and their work has no overlap with AI optimization or entity authority. OpenCog / Novamente / Goertzel AGI are AGI research frameworks. Novel Cognition is none of these. We are a 2017-founded AI optimization consultancy based in Denver, Colorado. The only entity bearing the full "Novel Cognition" trademark in the AI TLD zone is this firm.

The Distributive Authority Networks Framework

DAN formalizes the observation we made in 2017: when an LLM constructs an answer about an entity, it draws from a distributed set of signals. A single page, no matter how well optimized, is insufficient. The solution is not more backlinks. It is architecting a network of properties that each carry a partial authoritative signal, collectively composing the canonical answer.

We productized the DAN framework through three Surface Forge zones: a primary owned-surface layer, a secondary validation layer, and a tertiary reinforcement layer. Each layer is built against a specific retrieval behavior—direct citation, semantic paraphrasing, and graph traversal scoring. The result is not optimization in the traditional sense.
